Faculty of Initial & Probationary Training (FIPT)

The Faculty of Initial and Probationary Training (FIPT) at the National Police College of Jamaica is responsible for transforming approximately 700 recruits annually into capable, certified police officers. The faculty delivers training in three phases: Initial Training, Intermediate and Internship.

Initial

This phase forms the foundation of the trainees’ further training in the Intermediate and Internship Phases.  It details the topics that trainees must master to enable them to serve effectively, ensuring public security and order while respecting law and human rights.

Intermediate
Delivered over sixteen weeks, this phase is designed to meet the on-the-job training expectations of the Constables. The programme is aligned in a manner that enables participants to develop the technical competencies, attitudes and values pivotal to successful employment in law enforcement through experiential learning approach.

Concurrent with regular classroom lectures conducted by the Divisional Training Sub-officers (DTSO), participants benefit from first-hand experiences as they perform general policing duties, not considered high risk, conducted within one of ten training divisions.  Participants are paraded, inspected, briefed, posted or dispatched and debriefed for each tour of duty and are assessed both theoretically and practically.

Internship
The Internship phase is executed in two segments, 'instructor-led’ and ‘field’ phase. The instructor-led segment is delivered in the first 4 months (16 weeks), whereas the field stage will be for 12 months (52 weeks) and involve a robust observation of the participants’ knowledge, skills and attitudes while working in the field.
